Commissioner: delays in treating Mikheil Saakashvili, a citizen of Ukraine, could lead to his disability

Mikheil Saakashvili, a citizen of Ukraine and chairman of the executive committee of the National Reform Council under the President of Ukraine, is in critical condition and needs immediate treatment abroad.

This was confirmed by Otar Toidze, a doctor at an alternative medical council set up under the People's Defender of Georgia.

Procrastination with the treatment of Michael can lead to his disability, and later even fatal consequences.

Georgia's Public Defender Nino Lomjaria called on the country's authorities to fulfill their obligations and provide the patient with the necessary treatment, in accordance with the recommendations of the Alternative Medical Council.

I have repeatedly stressed the need to continue Michael's treatment in a multidisciplinary civilian clinic or abroad.

I call on the Georgian authorities to provide Saakashvili with adequate medical care and to comply with international law.  In particular, Article 3 of the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, according to which no one shall be subjected to torture or to inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.
