Had a meeting with the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Sexual Violence in Conflict, Pramila Patten

The UN Special Representative has arrived in Ukraine to support our country in documenting and investigating allegations of sexual violence related to hostilities.

Said that since April 1, a special telephone line of the Commissioner for Psychological Assistance has been operating with the support of UNICEF.  During the month of work, almost 700 people called her.  Most calls came after the liberation of cities in Kyiv region - Bucha, Irpen, Gostomel.

People seek help for sexual crimes, torture and abuse, both for themselves and for loved ones, including children.  Stressed that only a few give permission for the history and details of the crime against them to be made public.  In addition, because of stress, many victims of sexual violence do not remember everything that happened to them.

Because sexual crimes are those that are not usually reported publicly, this makes it difficult to provide assistance to victims and prosecute perpetrators.

They agreed on the importance of creating conditions for comprehensive assistance to victims of sexual violence, in order to avoid re-traumatization of victims during their communication with law enforcement agencies.

UN Special Representative Pramila Patten noted that acts of sexual violence are directed not only against the citizens of Ukraine, but also against the entire world community, and stressed the importance of immediate and concrete action.

Ms. Patten expressed her readiness to support the Commissioner in enhancing his capacity to respond promptly to cases of sexual violence, to provide appropriate assistance to victims and to mobilize the necessary resources.

The whole world should know about the sexual crimes of russian troops in Ukraine!  Criminals must be punished!
