Commissioner: The IAEA must immediately take under its protection nuclear power plants and other nuclear facilities

Terrorist acts by russian militants threaten Europe's environmental security, again endangered the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant and the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.

In the next hour, the occupiers, who captured the Zaporizhzhya NPP, plan to begin "disposal" (destruction) of ammunition on the site of the station near the ruins of the training center.

Detonation of the blast wave from the rupture of shells can damage the reactors of Zaporizhzhya NPP.

At the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, the racist military damaged the energy supply system again.  Yesterday, the “Ukrenergo” repair crew repaired the high-voltage power line that supplies the Chernobyl nuclear power plant and the city of Slavutych.  The line was put under voltage and the power supply of the Chernobyl infrastructure and the city of Slavutych. However, these works could not be completed because the occupiers soon damaged the line again.

The repair team of “Ukrenergo” is forced to go again to the occupied territory near the Chernobyl NPP, to look for and eliminate new damage.

The personnel of Zaporizhzhya and Chornobyl NPPs cannot rotate from the day of seizure of stations and work on the verge of physical exhaustion.

As a result of the absurd disregard of the terrorist states for the security of the Zaporizhia and Chernobyl nuclear power plants, the whole world is in danger of a nuclear catastrophe.

By its actions in Ukraine, the Russian Federation grossly violates the requirements of the Convention on the Prohibition of Military or Any Hostile Use of Environmental Means and Article 56 of the 1977 Additional Protocol to the Geneva Conventions and Other Acts Regulating International Nuclear Obligations.

I call on international partners and the IAEA to take all possible measures immediately to cease hostilities in the Russian Federation near high-risk facilities and to withdraw troops from the relevant territories.

The IAEA must immediately take these and other nuclear facilities in Ukraine under its protection.
