Commissioner: Torture by Russian militants of the peaceful city of Mariupol is nothing but genocide of the Ukrainian people

The city of Mariupol has been under blockade by racist troops for two weeks now.

Russian aircraft launch shells at residential areas.  The enemy cynically fires from volley fire systems “Grad” and howitzers.

As a result of incessant shelling, which continues day and night, 1582 civilians died in Mariupol.  Between bombings, when the least opportunity arises, the dead are buried in mass graves.

Just yesterday, 6 citizens died, two of them children.

The city is really a humanitarian catastrophe.  No water, medicine, food, electricity, heat, communication.

To cook, people light fires in the yards of houses.

According to local authorities, there are 400,000 people in the city, including more than 300 foreigners and an OSCE mission.

The Russian military disrupted the work of all humanitarian corridors.

Yesterday, a humanitarian convoy to Mariupol led by the Red Cross and clergy was stopped by russian invaders - all humanitarian aid, food and medicine were confiscated by russian militants.

Today, Ukraine is again trying to help Mariupol.  From the city of Zaporozhye leaves the next - the seventh column with humanitarian aid and empty buses for the inhabitants of Mariupol city, led by clergy.

By their actions, the aggressive russian troops show a desire to destroy, to wipe out the rebellious city, which did not accept the "russian liberators".

Torture by militants of the peaceful city of Mariupol is nothing but Ukrainian genocide in accordance with the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.

I call on the international community to use every opportunity to increase sanctions pressure on the terrorist state of the Russian Federation to liberate Ukraine from racist troops.

I ask NATO member states to establish a no-fly zone over Ukraine.
