The actions of russian militants at Ukraine’s nuclear facilities threaten an environmental tragedy for the whole of Europe

Yesterday, as a result of enemy shelling, the high-voltage transmission line of the 750 kV Zaporizhzhya NPP, through which electricity is supplied from the nuclear power plant, was damaged.

Currently, only one of the four high-voltage lines remains operational.  As a result, the capacity of the two operating power units of Zaporizhzhya NPP was reduced.

It is impossible to repair the line, as active hostilities continue in the area of   damage.

The situation is deteriorating, the power output of the station is decreasing.  There is a high risk of complete power outage.

If this happens, the consequences will be more serious than at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, because Energodar has 6 reactors and all of them need to be cooled and 6 pools that also need to be cooled.  That is why it is necessary to restore the power line to provide a significant reserve.

Currently, the station has 50 units of military equipment and about 500 soldiers.  The station staff works under the barrels of the invaders.

The situation at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant remains very difficult.  A small team is on the verge of exhaustion.  Workers complain of nausea, headache, dizziness.  Some of them suffer from diseases that require constant access to ending medications.

Exhaustion is forcing employees to rebel more and more.  Every morning the National Anthem of Ukraine is played at the station through a loudspeaker.  The station's staff is also in dispute with russian soldiers.

All this time, the Ukrainian authorities are trying to agree on the creation of a humanitarian corridor and the evacuation of power plant workers to replace them with a new change.

However, Russia still does not agree to these conditions.

The actions of the russian military at the Zaporizhia and Chernobyl nuclear power plants are an act of nuclear terrorism and a gross violation of the Convention on the Prohibition of Military or Any Hostile Use of Environmental Influences and Article 56 of the 1977 Additional Protocol to the Geneva Conventions and Other Acts  in the nuclear field.

I call on international partners and the IAEA to take all possible measures without delay to withdraw russian troops from the nuclear power plant and to take these and other nuclear facilities of Ukraine under their protection.
