Lyudmila Denisova calls on the UN to take all possible measures to encourage Russia to stop nuclear terrorism in Ukraine

Addressed the UN Crisis Coordinator in Ukraine Amin Awada regarding the critical situation around the safety of nuclear facilities in Ukraine.

Currently, all facilities in the nuclear power plant (ChNPP) and Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant (ZNPP) are under the control of the Russian military.  Chernobyl is de-energized, powered by a diesel generator.  Of the four ZNPP power lines, two have already been damaged by the occupiers.  In addition, Russian troops mined the coast of the Kakhovka Reservoir, which borders the nuclear power plant.

Stressed that by using nuclear power plants as a shelter and a means of influencing the course of the war, Russian troops are deliberately endangering the whole of Europe.

Such actions of the Russian Federation are a direct violation of Article 56 of Protocol I to the Geneva Conventions, as well as a violation of the International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism.  Nuclear power plants should not be attacked, even if they are military installations, if such an attack could lead to the release of dangerous forces and subsequent heavy casualties among the civilian population.

Calls on the UN to take all possible measures to encourage Russia to stop nuclear terrorism in Ukraine.
