Ms. Aksana Filipishyna: "Creation of conditions for free participation of persons with disabilities in elections is the extremely actual"

The Representative of the Commissioner for observance of the rights of the child, non-discrimination and gender equality Ms. Aksana Filipishyna and employees of the Secretariat took an active part in carrying out the dramatized representation in a format of a forum theater dedicated to problems of exercising by persons with disabilities the electoral rights.

Delivering a welcome speech to participants and the audience, Ms. Aksana Filipishyna noted that the issue of creation of appropriate conditions for free participation of persons with disabilities in elections is the extremely actual. And not only because it is one of obligations of Ukraine according to the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, priorities of National strategy for human rights and Strategy of activities of the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights in the sphere of prevention and counteraction of discrimination in Ukraine for 2014-2017.

"It is impossible to affirm that throughout all history of elections of different level in Ukraine our state could ensure on an equal basis the rights of a wide range of voters with special needs. It develops that a state was not ready once again – to local elections on October 25, 2015 – to that effect Ombudsman put a special focus in the Alternative report on a state of implementation of provisions of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities", – Ms. Aksana Filipishyna emphasized.

Besides, the Representative of the Commissioner noted that the chosen format of action is the extremely successful as it allows not only to discuss the existing problems, but also gives the chance to persons with disabilities directly to declare the position and to join dialogue with representatives of authorities for search of joint decisions.

The performance was realized within the project "Through Dialogue to Equality in Electoral Rights" which is carried out by Public organization "Theatre for Dialogue" in partnership with All-Ukrainian public organization "Generation of Successful Action" and with assistance of the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights, the Coalition for counteraction of discrimination, project "Without Borders" and the International Renaissance Foundation.
