On the occasion of Journalist Day, marked in Ukraine on June 6, the round table “Freedom of speech and the rights of the journalists in Ukraine” was held at the Secretariat.

The Representative of the Commissioner Mr. Andriy Mamalyha opened the round table with the minute of silence dedicated to the deceased journalists. During his speech Mr. Mamalyha expressed concerns about the numerous cases of interference in the work of journalists which happened lately.

Mr. Mamalyha recalled the incident that happened with the BBC reporter Mr. Andi Verity who was kicked and knocked over in Odesa when trying to question the Mayor of the city Mr. Hennadiy Trukhanov. And in May 2018 the journalists of the “Volyn 24”, Information Agency ITV, TV-channel “Priamyi”, the portal “Bureau of Journalistic Investigations “Resonance”, the portal “Informator”, the newspaper “33rd Channel”, the “Hroshi” program of the TV channel “1+1” and “StopCoru" were attacked.

“The pressure on the journalists is considered as something allowed and normal. When the crime is committed against the journalists, then the main tool they may use – is the publicity” – said the investigative journalist Mr. Danylo Mokryk during the round table.

The journalist and the Advisor to the Minister of Defence of Ukraine Ms Tetyana Popova, talked about violations of the rights of foreign and Ukrainian journalists, listed in the “Myrotvorets” database, when discussed the rights of the journalists in the ATO and JFO zone.

In the end Mr. Andriy Mamalyha noted that independent journalists are an essential pillar to the establishment of democracy in Ukraine and emphasized that protection of the rights of the journalists is a priority area of work for the Ombudsman's Office.
