In the course of a two-day working visit to the European Parliament the Ombudsman of Ukraine Nina Karpachova had meetings with the representatives of the leading political groups represented in the European Parliament. In particular, there were meetings with the President of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats Hannes Swoboda, the Chair of the European Parliament Committee on Foreign Affairs Elmar Brok (EPP Group, Christian Democrats), the Chair of the Subcommittee on Human Rights Barbara Lochbihler (Group of the Greens/European Free Alliance) and other parliamenterians. All of them confirmed their support for the Ukraine's efforts on the European integration. However they expressed their hope for more convincing steps of the Ukrainian authorities, which would testify Ukraine's commitment to the common European values, in particular the rule of law.

There has been a two-day visit of the Ombudsman of Ukraine Nina Karpachova to the European Parliament.
The visit began with a meeting with the incumbent Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Mr. Thomas Hammarberg and the Commissioner-elect Mr. Nils Muiznieks.
They discussed human rights and freedoms issues, as well as the priorities of the activity of the Ombudsman of Ukraine in the context of the European standards' promotion. Thomas Hammarberg, who recently prepared a Special report on the observance of human rights and freedoms in Ukraine based on the outcome of his visit to Ukraine in November last year, expressed his thanks to Nina Karpachova for the cooperation and noted that the position of the Ombudsman of Ukraine helped him to provide an objective analysis of the observance of human rights in Ukraine.

Today, on 13 February 2012, the Commissioner for Human Rights Nina Karpachova and the UN Resident Coordinator Olivier Adam signed the Memorandum of Understanding between the Institution of the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights and United Nations Office in Ukraine. The signing ceremony was held in the office of the Ombudsman of Ukraine.

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of Belgium to Ukraine Yana Zikmundova thanked the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights Nina Karpachova for her condolences to Belgium and Belgian people offered in connection with the terrorist act near the Palace of Justice in the city of Liege on 13 December 2011, as a result of which five persons died and over 100 innocent people, including children, were wounded.
